Of all the roses in the great wide worlds
The loveliest take time to rise and bloom
For they grow in grace and beauty for girls
Yet sadly the weakest will die in June
You may wonder what flowers grow for boys
To surmise one would choose the Middlemist
As this Chinese flower is rare as joys
As rare as men who live truly amidst
While the Jade vine thrives in southern rain
And daffodils pester a messy lawn
All the world’s flora dreams of love and pain
Dreading each dusk and yearning for the dawn
–
In biased eyes the dawn is women who
Bury old sins and watch blessings sprout through
