Chapter 6: Dreams of a Distant Land, a Distant Sadness

Emily dreamed again of humans that night.

First that silver light came spiraling down from the darkness ahead of her, then her pale fingers went to grasp it.

Then faces. Ones she had already seen from her prior dream but did not recall, then new ones. Small and round and doe-eyed and curious. And in the instant she saw their faces, photographs from their respective memories rushed within her mind. And with those memories came all of their great sadness and joy.

A boy, with the innocence and ability of a newborn baby, flashed before her, his skin dark, smile bright, and little body swaddled in a blue blanket. Feelings of love and happiness flooded throughout her body. A small sense of peace slipped within her heart.

But it was suddenly ripped away by a terrible shatter. Two gray figures screamed (as though their mouths were muffled by cloth) and shifted about the space behind the baby, shards of a vase and dying red flowers strewn about them. In that instant, the boy’s smile vanished and his brown eyes welled with tears, and within Emily arose a cold panic, a silent fear. Tears fell down her face.

She would remember only the feeling in the morning.
