Movies & Shows I Watched in May & June 2023

So far this year, I have watched over a hundred new movies and shows, and I have learned two lessons:

  1. Most movies are not that good.
  2. Most movies are not for me!

Though I’ve watched dozens of films in full, there are many that I had saved to my favorites or watched for 30 minutes before abandoning ship. Blue Velvet, Sleepers, Titan A.E., Indecent Proposal, The Fly, The Dreamers, Pieces of April, etc.

I’ve found the genres that I love (romance and fairytale fantasy), and I have found the content I can’t take in large doses (intense [or absurd] sexuality/ sexual violence and gore/gross-out). I love darkness, as I infuse it in all my writing, but I’m very sensitive.

Basically, I confirmed that I’m a major wimp. And I’m alright with that 🙂

Here is everything that I watched in May and June:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ❤ (This movie started my raccoon obsession. Tortured baby Rocket was definitely too much for me to bear, especially so late at night… I told you I’m sensitive!)
  • The Donut King
  • The Food that Built America (An insightful 3 part series on the history of large American brands like Heinz and Hershey’s. I love watching food for several hours)
  • Footloose (Sadly did not like that much! Loved the intro though)
  • Fast X
  • Something’s Gotta Give
  • Lost in Translation (I’ve been wanting to watch these movies for years, and I was so excited to watch it. That being said I did not enjoy this film one bit. In the Mood for Love is similar in concept and far superior in my opinion.)
  • Ever After (A cute Cinderella retelling, one that dragged and bored me a bit)
  • Father of the Bride ❤ ❤ (One of my favorite 90’s movies, so funny and sweet!)
  • Two Can Play That Game
  • Sophie’s Choice ❤ ❤ ❤ (I was elated to finally get around to watch this classic. I completely adored everything about it and was enthralled by the atmosphere, the acting, and the beautiful Meryl Streep. Love, love, loved.)
  • Do the Right Thing (This is my second Spike Lee movie, and I enjoyed it much more than She’s Gotta Have It.)
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ❤ (Miguel O’Hara did not disappoint, neither did the rest of the movie. I can’t wait for the next movie.)
  • Is That Black Enough For You?!? (An extremely informative documentary on the history of black film and its archetypes)
  • Day Shift
  • Black Girl Unlimited ❤ (My only novel for the month, and it was absolutely perfect! A magical realism novel about a young witch with big dreams that I highly recommend.)

Thank you for reading! What did you watch or read last month?

I’m a big Marvel fan so both the spider man and guardians were the favorites. But Indiana Jones wasn’t far behind. Very well made.

Yes indeed. Now looking forward to MI. Though I’m no fan of Tom Cruise, but the movies are usually well made and entertaining

I haven’t watched any of those movies because of Tom Cruise. They do look entertaining though!

As my husband says that they are like Hindi/ Punjabi action movies where anything can happen. But it’s entertaining so we watch them.
