flicker out | poem

what a short, miserable life you have lived

born in a tree and dead in the styx

marshes of despair and pity and pain

all of your own accord, nothing more to sustain

irreproachable on paper, but ultimately flawed in practice and design

hanging from street lamps as if you’re alive

what a short, miserable life you have lived,

all alone in this loud, bustling house

gone without a warning,

until all your lights flicker out.

  2. Beautiful work. Reminds me of a quote by a certain Buddhist monk, who said, “The body of man is like a flicker of lightning, existing only to return to nothingness.”

  4. Nice and illuminating. Styx is also the name of a band I am a fan of.
